Phoenix, AZ will always hold my heart for so many reasons, but one of the best is because of the incredible array of restaurants, coffeeshops, and cafes housed within the valley. Every time I head home I’m sure to stop in at my favorites (post coming soon!), but this week I was lucky to try a few new spots as well! Here’s two of my go-to’s and two new, soon-to-be favorite spots.
Lux is a not-so-small coffeehouse/bar/restaurant that sits on Central Avenue across the street from Central High and Steele Indian School Park. It’s definitely a hipster spot, but I remember this place before it was the coolest place in town. Alex and I headed in around 8am on a Sunday for coffee (hot chocolate for him!) and we just barely beat the morning rush. Get there early to find a spot inside, or wait till late night and stop in for a nightcap at their bar. Also, I’ve heard their mac n’ cheese is amazing.
Cherry Blossom Noodle Cafe
Cherry Blossom is my all-time favorite sushi restaurant in Phoenix. It serves up traditional bite-sized sushi along with rice bowls, udon, appetizers, and hot plates. I love their tekka don (pictured) which is raw tuna with avocado, cucumber, and sushi rice, and their gyoza is perfectly cooked. They’re housed next to Snoh, which is another favorite of my family and they sit uptown on Camelback and 7th street. Check them out!
This was my first time at Ollie’s, but I can guarantee that it won’t be my last! With their bottomless hot coffee and beautiful array of pastries, I was hooked for sure. My mom and her friend had been there numerous times. Her friend lives in the neighborhood across the street and the staff greeted her by name when she walked in, quickly grabbing her her usual drink order. It’s things like that that make me love local businesses! Ollie’s is located at McDowell and 16th street. Stop in and support your local coffeeshop! (Also try their blackberry pie. It was unreal.)
Years and years ago my dad took me to The Coronado for a nice dinner before a show. We order rare strip steaks. Today, however, with new owners, The Coronado boasts an impressive, vegetarian/vegan menu. And as much as I love a good steak, I gotta say that this is great. I ordered an iced coffee with almond milk and coconut milk chia seed pudding and it was truly to die for. The Coronado has a full menu served all day, fresh baked pastries, a bar, and a dog friendly patio! So bring your furry (or not so furry) friends and check it out!
