Tonight, I didn’t end up going out until almost 1am. I headed to a small coffeeshop to meet an old friend. Now, let me just say that this coffeeshop (called Jobot) was a popular place for me when I was in high school. It’s located in the arts district of Phoenix, in a walkable, friendly area. While the shop isn’t open at all hours, it does have a nice patio area that is always open with lights on. I forgot how much I loved it.
I waited a while before my friend, Tammy, showed up and while I was sitting there, I started looking around at the city, the lights, the now quiet streets. I love Phoenix. I really do, deep down. It’s the city that raised me.
After talking for about an hour, we said our goodbyes and I got back in my car to head home. As I started driving though, I realized that I like the city most at night, so why not enjoy it? I ended up driving around the entire downtown Phoenix area, pulling over occasionally to look up at the buildings reaching into the black sky. I drove up to McDowell Rd and back down central all the way past Cityscape.
I remember when I was upset in high school, I used to just drive around the city, or part of it. Being alone, usually late at night, taking in the city, was something I’ll never forget and will always cherish. I’m thankful that tonight, I got to do it one more time.
